How Josh is Modernizing Manufacturing

For Josh, a Senior Engineer in Automation at Biogen, the path to a fulfilling career has been paved with curiosity and collaboration. With nine years of professional experience, five of those at Biogen, Josh has become a key player in the company’s manufacturing modernization efforts, helping to shape the future of Biogen’s pharmaceutical production.

Josh grew up in the small town of Abingdon, Virginia, and earned his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Virginia Tech. His early career included an internship at a Häagen-Dazs factory in California, which sparked his interest in manufacturing. Later, while working for a large automation contractor, Josh was introduced to Biogen as a client. That connection eventually led him to join Biogen full-time in 2020.

Today, Josh is deeply involved in a transformative project to digitize Biogen’s manufacturing processes. “We are introducing a manufacturing execution system which is software that keeps the factory running smoothly,” he explains. “It’s exciting because once you get this information into a system, you can start doing data analytics to better understand your process. The ultimate goal is to become an adaptive plant – one that can automatically adjust operations in real time.”

Josh’s role includes supporting new drug batches, managing project implementation, and contributing to strategic design decisions. He’s seen his responsibilities grow significantly over the years. “I started out with one or two sections of the process,” he says. “Now I’m working on more complex operations and have a wider scope. I’ve moved into areas I wasn’t familiar with and taken on design roles where I help shape the automation strategy.”

Josh values the strong team culture at Biogen, especially within the automation group, where collaboration and flexibility are key. “If you come across a hard problem, you don’t have to tackle it alone—everyone comes together to help,” he shares. For those interested in joining his team, Josh emphasizes a mindset focused on continuous improvement, clear communication, and teamwork: “If you can convey your ideas well, you can get people on the same page to help solve your challenge.”

Outside of work, Josh focuses on his family. He and his wife have two young children, ages five and two. “One of our favorite things to do together is sit down and read a book,” he says. “It’s a great way to connect.” He also enjoys cooking, especially smoking meat. “Pork butt is my specialty,” he laughs. “Though it’s mostly just for me and my wife as our kids are what we call ‘chicken nugget monsters’.”

Josh Ingle’s story is a testament to how innovation and teamwork can drive meaningful impact – not just in manufacturing, but in the culture that makes Biogen a great place to grow.
