For Carmelina Tyler, Medical Director of Nephrology, her career path reflects both intentional growth and an openness to opportunity. Raised in the suburbs of Philadelphia, she developed a strong academic foundation and a genuine passion for science early on. This interest naturally led her toward a career in medicine. She earned her PharmD from Thomas Jefferson University’s School of Pharmacy and went on to complete a residency at the Medical University of South Carolina, where she specialized in solid organ transplant with a focus on kidney care.
“Pharmacy gave me the perfect balance,” she says. “I loved science and medicine, but I knew being a physician wasn’t the path for me. In transplant pharmacy, you get to care for patients across the continuum of care. From the ICU to the outpatient clinic, you’re central to the decision‑making process and are able to help patients navigate incredibly complex therapies so that they can have the best possible outcomes.”
Following her residency, Carmelina began her industry career in a Medical Science Liaison role, building a broad foundation across pharma, payer engagement, and medical affairs. After the birth of her children, she joined Reata Pharmaceuticals, where she deepened her experience in Medical Affairs before the company was acquired by Biogen. Her early work at Biogen was on the spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) team. “I saw firsthand how Biogen transformed a devastating disease,” she says. “Biogen’s commitment to this therapeutic area and deep scientific investment was refreshing.”
In June 2025, Carmelina transitioned to her current role in Nephrology, a move she describes as “coming home.” “I trained in kidney transplant, and I feel incredibly passionate about this space because the unmet need is so great,” she explains. “There hasn’t been great success in development for antibody‑mediated rejection (AMR). Patients have limited options, and even a timely diagnosis can be challenging.” What excites her most about Biogen’s growing nephrology franchise is its momentum and long‑term commitment. “Biogen has doubled down on immune‑mediated kidney diseases, she says. "It's going to be a domino effect in a really great way."
That sense of momentum mirrors Carmelina’s own development. “This is the biggest organization I’ve worked for, and I’ve never been somewhere so invested in my growth,” she shares. “I’ve been promoted from Associate Director to Medical Director and have also transitioned to different disease areas. I know I won’t stay stagnant here, and that’s incredibly motivating.”
Outside of work, Carmelina unwinds with her family at their lake house, where she and her husband spend unplugged time with their two young children. “There’s barely any phone service. It’s our escape,” she says. “Pontoon rides, tubing, s’mores, swimming off the dock. That recharge is important.”
For those considering a career at Biogen, especially in Nephrology, Carmelina’s advice is simple: “If you want to roll up your sleeves and truly move the needle, to be part of something that will change lives, then this is the place. Reach out, talk to people, get to know the team. You’ll see that we’re all working toward the same vision.”
