Science & Innovation
We have been successfully developing, reliably manufacturing, and delivering high quality medicines to patients for more than three decades. We attribute this success to our highly skilled, talented and dedicated employees.
Our chemistry, manufacturing and controls technical development teams continually advance process innovation, analytical technologies and new drug delivery solutions to improve patient experiences. Our engineering teams utilize highly differentiated technology and engineering capabilities to support our operations. Our manufacturing network includes internal state-of-the-art factories and external manufacturing factories with trusted partners across multiple modalities, ensuring resilience in supply chains that serve patients with medicines across the world.
Our robust quality control ensures all medications meet required standards for potency, purity and product safety. Our quality management systems also ensure standardization, compliance, and global regulatory requirements are met in more than 90 countries.
Our end-to-end supply chain expertise enables worldwide distribution and deploys robust risk management to ensure consistent and uninterrupted delivery to patients, while also reducing our impact on the environment by limiting waste and utilizing resources efficiently.
Biogen operates internal manufacturing factories across the United States and Switzerland, with the majority of manufacturing operations located in the U.S. For over 40 years, Biogen has established and continues to invest in U.S.-based manufacturing.
As one of the largest biologic manufacturing companies in the world, our global manufacturing factories house 263,000 liters of installed bioreactor capacity.
The Research Triangle Park Area (RTP) in North Carolina is the home for Biogen’s largest manufacturing facilities. Our North Carolina campuses include state-of-the-art manufacturing with 115,000 liters bioreactor capacity. Our manufacturing operations in North Carolina include seven manufacturing factories across multiple modalities. An eighth state-of-the-art factory is currently under construction and will be operational in the second half of 2025.
Additionally, our co-located development pilot plant and process development labs support new product development activities and manufacturing technology advancement. The RTP Bio site has been certified as a Carolina Star site for its exceptional safety record for more than ten years and the RTP Pharma site for three years.
Biogen’s biologic campus in Wake County.
Our RTP Bio site manufactures a range of clinical and commercial biologic products for indications such as multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease and lupus while also enabling the manufacturing of oligonucleotide-based drugs.
Our biologics campus has three factories: flexible volume manufacturing, small-scale manufacturing, and large-scale manufacturing. The site has expanded multiple times due to investment in new manufacturing technologies and larger scale factories. Our RTP Bio site also plays a crucial role in manufacturing for Biogen’s partnerships.
Biogen’s pharmaceutical campus in Durham County.
Our RTP Pharma site operates across four modalities and is the main source of supply for many of our clinical and commercial products including multiple sclerosis, spinal muscular atrophy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and Alzheimer’s disease.
It is comprised of four factories: antisense oligonucleotide manufacturing, parenteral filling, oral solid dose, and gene therapy manufacturing.
Biogen’s Solothurn biologics manufacturing factory.
The concept and design of the Solothurn biomanufacturing factory is based on Biogen’s long-standing experience in the field of biopharmaceutical production.
The factory combines Biogen’s latest concepts for fed-batch cell culture technology and protein purification, enabling the large-scale production of biopharmaceuticals and enabling us to provide meaningful high-quality therapies to patients. With a modular facility design, the site currently has two production cells comprising four bioreactors each with a respective volume of 18,500 liters.
Our Pharmaceutical Operations & Technology organization is comprised of thousands of talented individuals across the globe.
Hear from a few of our colleagues in North Carolina about what it’s like to work with us:
Jason’s career journey has taken him across various areas of the manufacturing floor, upward as a supervisor, overseas for a special project, and then beyond manufacturing into his current position.
With growing up on a farm, Lynsey says her work ethic started at a young age. She always knew she wanted to pursue engineering; an industry she acknowledges can be male dominated.
