Inside Patient Services: Bryony’s Career Journey

When Bryony Maitra joined Biogen nearly 18 years ago, she didn’t know what the future would hold. What she did know, even then, was that she had landed somewhere special. Today, as a leader in Patient Services, Internal Compliance, Bryony reflects on a career shaped by growth, collaboration, and a culture that never stops investing in its people.

“I came here thinking I’d stay for a year while I figured out my life,” Bryony says. “Instead, I reported to leaders who saw something in me and helped me along the way.”

That support has translated into real opportunity. Over her tenure, Bryony has held seven different roles, each with a broader scope and deeper impact. She’s currently participating in Biogen’s senior leadership rotational program, designed to give high-potential employees visibility, stretch assignments, and a clear path to future leadership. “It shows me the sky is the limit,” she says. “I’m constantly getting opportunities to grow.”

In Patient Services, growth often comes hand in hand with complexity. Bryony’s role in Internal Compliance sits at the intersection of regulation, empathy, and execution. Her team ensures that Patient Services agents, those who interact directly with patients every day, have clear guidance on how to successfully communicate with patients in a highly regulated environment.

“My job is to make sure we’re doing what we’re supposed to do: protecting patients and protecting the business,” she explains.

What makes the work meaningful, she says, is the way teams collaborate to solve problems together. New challenges are constant, but they’re never faced alone. “Anything that comes my way isn’t scary,” Bryony says. “There’s always someone who can help me, and we’ll figure it out together.”

That mindset, shared ownership and mutual support, is core to Patient Services’ culture. Bryony describes herself as an introvert who steps outside her comfort zone when needed, but one thing never changes: her commitment to making sure people feel included and valued. “I care deeply about making sure people know they belong and that they have something meaningful to contribute,” she says, “And this is why I fit right in with Biogen’s culture.”

For those considering a career in Patient Services at Biogen, Bryony points to a few traits that set people up for success: strong organization, attention to detail, ability to follow-through, and a process-improvement mindset. Patient support doesn't stop at resolving today’s issue, it requires thinking ahead and staying engaged. People who bring ideas forward and look for better ways of working, she says, are the ones who continue to grow.

Perhaps the most powerful lesson Bryony has learned throughout her career is confidence. “Assume you’re the smartest person in the room and trust your gut,” she recalls being told by a trusted leader. “It’s okay to make mistakes. That’s how you grow.”
