For Rachel Smith, becoming a Medical Science Liaison (MSL) was about finding a direct path to helping patients. A neuroscientist by training with a Ph.D. and more than 11 years of MSL experience, Rachel began her career at the lab bench before realizing she wanted to work closer to the people who could benefit from scientific innovation. Today, she serves as a Principal MSL on Biogen’s Lupus team, supporting healthcare professionals across the south-central United States.
Her connection to lupus is deeply personal. "Lupus is a soft spot for me," Rachel shares.
After losing her aunt to lupus nephritis, she felt a strong pull toward the therapeutic area. When the opportunity to join Biogen's Lupus franchise emerged, it felt like the right combination of professional purpose and personal meaning. The chance to contribute to an area where patients still face significant unmet needs made her decision easy.
Rachel's career journey has taken her from toxin/receptor research to rheumatology and dermatology, two specialties that uniquely prepared her for her current role. At Biogen, she sees an exciting opportunity to help advance therapies that could make a meaningful difference for people living with lupus. "What excites me most is the possibility of helping bring a medicine from clinical trials to patients," she says. "In cutaneous lupus, there are currently no approved therapies. The opportunity to potentially be part of delivering a first treatment option for patients is incredibly motivating."
That sense of purpose fuels her work every day. Rachel often reflects on her aunt's experience and the many patients who stand to benefit from scientific progress. It is a reminder that behind every clinical program, every healthcare provider conversation, and every medical insight are real people waiting for more options.
Outside of work, Rachel's focus is family. She and her husband are raising two young children in Texas, and much of their free time revolves around youth baseball. Despite living far from Boston, the Smith family are devoted Red Sox fans, a tradition that started with her husband’s childhood and has become a family passion.
Join Our Lupus MSL Team
As Biogen continues building its lupus organization, Rachel believes successful MSLs share three core traits: curiosity, flexibility, and teamwork. “Individuals who enjoy continuous learning, can adapt in dynamic environments, and thrive in highly collaborative teams will be well-positioned for success,” she says. Biogen is seeking talented MSL professionals with experience in rheumatology or dermatology who are passionate about advancing science and helping improve patient outcomes.
