Adventures in Biotechnology High School Lab Program
The application window for summer 2019 Adventures in Biotechnology has now closed. Please direct any inquiries to email@example.com. Information about sessions for the summer of 2020 will be posted in early 2020.
Conduct a hands-on lab project, meet and interact with scientists and other biotech professionals and get an inside view of a biotech company! You will learn about the drug development process while also learning and doing a series of biotech laboratory techniques. Each day will focus on lab work, but there will also be opportunities to hear from and speak with employees from a wide range of departments. The laboratory component for most of our sessions will focus on modifying DNA in order to produce and purify green fluorescent protein! To accomplish this, you will learn and do the following techniques: bacterial transformation, site-directed mutagenesis, protein extraction, affinity purification and PAGE. But don’t worry if you are not familiar with these lab techniques - that’s what you will learn during the program!
Hours: Each week-long session meets daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., but only until 1 p.m. on Friday. Students are expected to attend the entirety of the program. All of our programming is free and lunch is provided each day. Programs are held at Biogen’s Community Lab locations on our Cambridge, MA and Research Triangle Park, NC campuses.
The Biogen Community Lab admissions committee is looking for students who are interested in learning more about Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) and who have completed one year of high school (9th grade or above).
Note: At the time of the application, students must be in 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th grade to apply to the Adventures in Biotechnology Summer Program. Students entering 9th grade in the fall of 2019 will not be accepted.
Admissions decisions will be made following the application deadline and preference is given to students from Cambridge and Somerville, MA; Wake and Durham counties, NC; and students from low income households and groups historically underrepresented in science. However, we welcome any and all students to apply.
